Yes yes I confess I did it ! I often dive solo and one time I was doing a shore dive and while preparing my gear, an older gentleman came upon me and began to question me about diving. I always love talking diving and never mind when asked questions by interested parties. Unfortunately my conversation with this person distracted me from my setup. I went into the water up to my chest and put my regulator in my mouth and tried to take a breath
Nothing ! I looked at my consol which read , you guessed it Nothing !!
I was able to reach back over my head and turn on my air, which saved me the embarrassment of having to take the rig off to turn my air on. I thought I was seasoned enough to be able to do a checklist in my mind. Now I have made up hard copy pre-dive checklist that I take along and perform before every dive. Glad I didnt giant stride off the rocks that day.

Hmmm
I can turn air on underwater, but push up the bottom of my tank to reach when in 7mm wet (it's shrunk)
Can't manage it on land - but have never really tried.
Never entered with air off, but had to get someone else to turn my air on once or twice. Weekend before last boat diving I needed to do this before entering the water - my first stage seat was worn, so my 2nd stages were freeflowing slightly. Therefore I'd left me air off til the last moment.

I seem to recall someone up here (I think) jumping off a boat with double steels, wetsuit, and a steel deco bottle with his air turned off and no air in his BC. Not a good outcome

and ones that I have never even considered, let alone tried out. I reckon I could reach my valve without taking off my equipment, but will definitely have to give it a try this weekend.
This has definitely made me think (for a change!). I did have a dream just before I got back in the water after 5 months of no diving that I did a shore dive and tried to descend without turning my air on... I have never been so embarrassed in a dream! :embarrass

Can you reach your own valves to turn your air on?
1. Underwater Yes, and I practice.
2. On deck/shore Yes, even after I put my gear on.;]~
3. Without undoing buckles & snaps and shifting things around Isn't that the idea?
4. Quickly Yes.
and....
1. Have you ever forgotten to turn your air on before donning? Yes
2. Have you ever be then last one on the boat to go in and "Oops!" Nope. Just reached back and turn it on.
3. Have you ever Jumped in with your air off? No.
4. Had a freeflow that you needed to control with the valve? Only on land - too freakin' cold.
and....
1. Have you practiced this skill? Valve drills? Regularly.
2. Can you do it with a jacket BC? [Don't know - don't use.[/I]
3. Can you do it with a BP and STA? Yes.
4. Can you do it with valves that angle back? If you're talking about those tilted K valve thingies (or whatever the official designation was) the answer is "Don't know - never dived them."

The one thing I seem to forget often is to zip up my wetsuit! At which point I have to demonstrate to my students one practical application of being able to remove and replace your scuba at the surface.

My answer to all of your questions, accept second question number 4 is YES.
and (swallowing) I'm an instructor. Luckily I cant turn my air on in every situation myself, so I open it secretly without the students noticing, while shouting at the unfortunate sob who didn't do it before getting in water (and his buddy-for not properly checking him).
