"Somewhere along that stretch of beach are the remains of the Summer(or Sumner), Elk and John C Wyman, the barges that she was towing."

Is that what I see on Google Earth east of the tug wreck. Im now getting more interested as I thouht the Herc was alone.

Thanks Sean for the additional info.

PS: I hope they never take down that concession stand as its a crucial land mark.
Gee, I don't know but I will have to look.

In the meantime does anyone know of any good shore wreck sites just so I can get my wetsuit wet?

Yes Medic

The tip of Beavertail

If you dive the tip of the Beavertail Penninsula and go around in a westernly direction at 10 ft I think there is a broken up wreck. Just be wary of the current.

Good being relative, here are a few:

Gem : Newport Harbor(can't miss it, it's at the end of the boat ramp)
Empire State: Bristol Harbor (wait till Winter as it is nasty in the Summer)
Bessie Rogers: Across from the Gem
Steamer Rhode Island
Note: These are all more wrecksites than wrecks.

So that's the name of that wreck! If I recall (from many years ago) . . . it has a dock piling through it.

Was there any doubt he'd know? :D

The amount of information about wrecks John has crammed in his head truly amazes me.

Thanks for the plug Chris. Most people just get bored by my stories.

That is the one. But did you know that there is yet another wreck (keel and ribs)
within 100' of that one? I don't know what it is. We stumbled on it one winter while swimming over to the Bessie Rogers. I have a postcard(from the early 1900's) that shows the Bessie Rogers as she was laying in the cove below "Beacon Rock"(Brian Cuhna's estate). She was being used as a boathouse. There are several views of her in existance.

Is the gem the one at the end of the Fort Adams boat ramp?
