Well my wife, and bestest dive buddy gave me a ruling today - Zoop or a DG03 (hollis) she advised me that I can purchase the Petrel on completion of my tech diver course.

Again thanks for all your help, my last request would be - for the price would you recommend any other computer over the DG03 for purely recreational diving with a max depth of 110feet? (my plan is to use this watch in gauge mode when i do progress to tec).

The DG03 is a very good choice for diving anything less than 50M. It is larger than I'd like, but still a good size for your wrist.

I personally recommend the Aeris Epic if you don't want a compass. The OCi is what I use. I don't think the Hollis does buddy air, which can be useful too. All will function well and are very reliable. The suunto computers are less reliable I think.

I'll strongly advise trying the DSS boot/bungiee thingy. Other than that, should work well - happy diving.

You can buy the DG03 and the bungee mount from the same supplier.
DG03 Dive Computer and Digital Gauge by Hollis Gear - Dive Gear Express

When we were deciding on what to purchase for my friends hogarthian type gear the decision was pretty simple to get the DG03. It has been working great.

That's the advice I would give any prospective tech student. We do the introductory tech classes with bottom timers or computers in gauge mode. In the class we discuss the pros and cons of using computers in various ways for decompression diving.

Great choices....

Personally I would buy a Vyper second hand on ebay now and then a Shearwater Petrel (new) later if you decide to continue with technical diving although you won't actually need it for training. You can then use the Vyper in gauge mode as secondary timing device, although many folk use the Uwatec/Scubabpro 330m which is inexpensive and reliable. Vyper and most other Suuntos dont have the ascent rate indicator working in gauge mode. (The Uwatec has rather a good one). You may be lonely using a Suunto DX as a technical diving computer. I have personally have not seen one used for that purpose.

It gets beter,

Just talked to my lds and they advised me that the DG03 has been discontinued and has been replaced by the Tx1 and they cant order a leftover dg03 in (meanwhile I can still get one via dive express) so my LDS is recommending a DG02 or a vyper ....thats quite the significant difference both in capability and cost.

hmmmn

Go to the excellent online shop linked above (great customer service) and get the DG03 there. Giving business to an LDS is great when they have what you want, but if they don't that's just too bad for them.

There is not a bungee mount for a DG02, so I would rule it out.

As to an LDS, it is nice that you are offering to support them, but today we live in a world that shipping from all over is accomplished in a efficient manner. Everyone needs to eat, and supporting one vs the other is not your problem, but feeding your family is. Spend your money where you want to.
