If I were buying regs for any loved one, they would be new and as good or better than what I use for myself.

I don't think that's what is happening here, but I definitely don't understand some people who buy top shelf for themselves and then would buy regs for their wife or children that are not as good as what they are using.
No one here is suggesting buying something for their wife or children that they wouldn't dive themselves.

Sea Elite is Divers Supply's in-house branding of HOG/Edge products
Just my NSH opinion; while the first is okay, neither the Sea Elite nor the HOG second stage cases have the robustness of the D6. My 2psi...

Don't buy used or off brand for your son. Personally, when my precious only daughter becomes a diver or my youngest son, the closest one to my heart among 5 kids
Can't say I'm a fan of the implication (which admittedly may just be how I took it) that choice of reg set is a reflection of how much someone loves their kid.

Define better.... My Conshelfs and Mk5s and 108s and 109s are bullet proof reliable and good breathers.

This, exactly. My kids dive vintage gear.... That I serviced, and know exactly the condition of. That I tune far better than any rental reg they've ever dove. That I can fix, if needed. That I inspect regularly (more often than my own). And that has stood the test of time. Look at the bathtub curve of failure rates... Just saying.

There is nothing wrong with wanting new for your kid... But there is also nothing wrong with used, reliable gear and wanting said kid to know how the gear they are relying on actually works.

Respectfully,

James

I did not just say "better". I said "new and as good or better".

If those regs can be purchased new and they breathe just as well or better than, for example, an Atomic Z2, and they offer just as good and flexible hose routing as a Z2 (i.e. must at least have a bottom LP port) then I would consider them.

Also, I said what *I* would do. I don't service my own regs. I don't want my regs to be serviced by someone who only works on regs once every two or three years (i.e. me).

If I did service my own often enough to have high confidence in my work, then I might purchase regs for my wife or kids (if I had either) using different criteria.

Fair enough... And I apologize for not making it clear I was only addressing one piece of your comment.
As to the rest, it was a addressing a few things and not at you in particular... At the end of the post, I tried to make a point that I firmly believe there is value to both sides of the discussion.

Respectfully,

I'd recommend an unsealed Atomic Z2 or a Scubapro Mk2+ Evo / S270.

It should be a small reg, so no D420 or G250.

Ideally an Atomic Z1 bought second hand and serviced by Rob. The Z1 mouthpiece tube is slightly smaller than the newer Z2 and takes the smallest Aqualung comfobite mouthpiece. It does not get more comfortable like that for kids, and also performs as good as any reg out there.

The C370 is small but the mouthpiece bore is large. Metal regs (109) might also not be comfy for kids.

No worries! No offense taken. No occasion for apologies. :D

Your children never dive a serviced regulator? only new? Do you replace them every 2 years? Can I have your cast offs? I'll pay for shipping.
I have NEVER used or bought used dive equipment in my life. I'd do it even less for my kids or wife or nephews or family.

I do sell my used, and serviced, equipment when I have newer or more up to date replacements. I am selling my slightly used SP A2 dive computer because I am getting the new SP dive computer to replace the A2.
