Plugging a lean mix into the dry suit is not the first choice but the only one available in some cases.
We learned that plugging in a lean mix in 40F water means that the only realistic choice is to thumb the dive at the dock.

That's rough. 40F water is no joke. I once brought 3mm gloves to dive 45-48F waters. Could not feel my fingers for a few days.
 
All diving, but especially technical diving with its greater complexity, has dependencies upon so many individual components, any of which can end the dive. Of course this is mitigated by technical divers to a certain extent with many pieces of redundant equipment: gas reserves, alternate gas supplies, lights, etc. More kit means a greater chance of failure, or, worse still, forgetting some items.

However, the fact remains that sometimes the dive just has to be aborted or skipped. Frustrating, but a fact of life.
