Which do you think is less dangerous at 160ft? Open-circuit air or CCR trimix?

Only the better ones have audible and tactile warnings ;)
None of the people around you* (*you being anyone with audible alerts) wants to hear, on an other enjoyable dive:

BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP (depth alert)
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP. (NDL low)
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP. (no NDL)
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP. (low gas alert)
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP. (gas reserve alert)
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP. (safety stop depth)
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP ... BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP <continues until back on boat>. (missed safety stop duration by 0.000001 seconds)

Worst part of diving around strangers on vacation 🤮

The better divers who pay attention do their DC don't need a babysitter. When I was in the Maldives doing deco dives other divers DC alarms were going off. Back on the dive boat the divers whose alarms were going off were telling me they could hear my DC alarm. When I told them it my Shearwater does not have audio alarms they were shocked. It was their own alarms going off and these divers did not even know. lol

As a boomer, allow me to ask what the letters F O mean to you? You can make fun of us boomers all you want, but at least we could have sex without being wrapped in a inner tube.

50 trimix dives may be a moderate number to you, years worth to others. My last dive partner and I tried several times to figure out the cost effectiveness of a rebreather. Couldn't make it work for us at the time. Of course, although we occasionally did, neither of us really wanted to spend more than 3 hours in the water.

I can attest that for me, this is true. We did a lot of "deep" air diving because it was all that was around. The theory at the time (1975-77) was that you built up resistance to narcosis. I don't think you had any resistance, but by repetition, you just kinda got used to it. Never got used to freezing my ass off doing air deco.

I am not a proponent of "deep" air diving, whatever that means to you. I still believe that, for the occasional deeper dive, trimix is relatively cheap.

You want a rebreather, hell, go and buy 2, you probably will anyhow when a newer model comes out. If you believe they are safer, then they are. Whatever puts you in the water with the most confidence and comfort, is fine with me.
Good on you ofg-1,

Boomers were raised by the greatest generation. People who experienced the great depression and WW2.

Boomers Know progressive BS when they see it and call it out.

I was looking for this film several times . If anyone has a link , please post it

Here is the link to the video of the diver Rocco (Recco ? ) .

First time seeing this film. Mon Dieu! That's how it's done, no fancy rebreather or dive computer. All you need is a set of twins pumped to the max, a Mistral single stage two hose regulator and away you go. Although, I think Recco's female dive attendant definitely stole the show.

Let me clarify - 20k is the cost WITHOUT stretching. It's really the maximum (maybe only the GUE route could be sligymore expensive, and not much).

If one wants to stretch things, it's going to be less most likely
If you live in locations where there is a lot of rebreather activity, e.g. Florida you may find bargains in new and used rebreathers. It also depends on the purchasing power of the $. In many other parts of the world rebreathers are more expensive due to exchange rate, tariffs/taxes. Also, there are hidden costs with associated upgrades, drysuits for those long rebreather dives, deco/stage tanks and regulators. If you are in a remote location e.g. the Pacific region, you may need to order helium and oxygen in large industrial cylinders and will then require a gas transfer pump, oxygen and helium analysis instruments. Soda lime may be more expensive. Additional diluent and oxygen tanks in various sizes for recreational and tech applications. Also don't forget different size scrubbers for recreational and tech application. Maybe upgrade the HUD to the NERD system. What about carbon dioxide monitoring? The list goes on.
