I may be a bit late to the party, but how long do the whales usually stay around? We'll be there at the end of April .... any chance they take an extended vacation?

A few will show up in November or even late October. A few will stay around through April and maybe even into mid-May, but not very many.Trilogy whale watching tour operator:

Just last weekend we were undressing from a dive when a couple of adults surfaced not more than 100 feet from the boat. We all watched in excitement as one of them broke the surface in a spectacular breech. That's when the encounter got interesting.
The breeching whale started thrashing violently at the surface. Its pec fin broke the water and was longer than the zodiac we were in! The whale was still visible under the surface of the water as it started racing full speed directly at our boat. The second whale then started chasing after it as if to overtake the first and neither whales were more than 2 feet underwater! These animals were ~40 feet long and traveling at ramming speed starting from not more than 100 feet from us. We were completely helpless and still at anchor. Fortunately, they went under and came up a safe distance on the other side.
