I'm hoping I get an encounter this year. It's been almost 4 years since the last one!!!! Come on Whales!!!

Good Luck! But it doesn't count without pics ;)
And if you do see them, giv'em a shaka for me!

We were so lucky to see a Humpback last year while diving (and yes, we have pictures)!! Amazing!! No doubt we're hoping for a repeat encounter this year. :)

My dive boat captain said he'd seen the first of the season in early November, off the leeward side of Oahu. Been diving fairly regularly since then, and straining to hear them, but so far, no dice. Maybe this week? There's nothing more awesome in the world than diving with whale song. I can't imagine how wonderful it would be to actually get a glimpse of one. Or a cow and her calf. Now, that would be totally off the charts!

OK, we heard them again today although it was pretty faint and shortlived. The surface was glassy all day without much wind or waves or signs of whales. We finally saw some spouting late in the day, after 3pm at Ulua Beach. It's still early in the season but they do seem to be closing in on us!

On another note, I found a pair of shades at Five Caves this morning. Anyone lose sopme sunglasses today? Describe them and they're yours!! Otherwise..merry Christmas to me! Merry Christmas to ME!!! :D

The last time we were in Maui, I wans't a diver (the snorkleing on thet trip was the main reason I got certified), but we saw plenty of whales just watching from the condo & the walking the beach. I'm trying to convince my wife we can afford to return to Maui either in late January or early February of '11....

How late in winter (being from Chicago I find it hard using that word in conjuction wiht Maui) do the whales stick around?

I know for sure till mid April and I think sometimes maybe early May. Perhaps one of the locals can chime in.

I'd say the best guaranteed whale action is in February. January and March aren't bad at all. We've been hearing them more and more already this year. The boys and I heard them pretty good at Ulua around 2:00 today. It was so glassy too!! Nice day for diving today. So nice I think I'm gonna go again tomorrow.

We probably will! My goal is to see some again this year (it's been about 3 years since my last underwater whale encounter and I'm ready for another one!!).
