Oahu has ok, not great diving. Its pretty beat up from years of abuse, but there are some great dives to be done as well. It really depends on where else you've been diving and the day you go out (as the quality of days here varies wildly). Personally I like it as it's very interesting, though it doesn't agree with everyone.
The opportunities here on Oahu are better than the other islands, but there is much better diving on the other islands.
Compared to NC, its going to be shockingly expensive, but its not too bad with what youll make here. Consider finding someone to share a house with or sharing an apartment. Theres some cheap hostels in Waikiki (on lemon st, cannot remember the names of them .maybe Hokondo?).
Check out the newspapers for apartment prices:

Food is more expensive, gas is more expensive, and jobs are plentiful (we have the lowest unemployment in the states).
I really won't recommend a shop as much as I will tell you to pass on Aarons, AAA and Island Divers (just my opinion, I'm sure there's people out there who will say they love those three.... Ive just seen and heard too much of the three of them and wouldnt recommend anyone to be involved with them . If you need more specific info you can pm me).
