DivingCRNA:
One of the nice things about the bp/w is it's simplicity. You are not overloaded with a bunch of stuff you do not use on your dive.

Well, simplicity is great, but that safety small crab items will play a part in saving you.
Dive safe my friend

timle:
SMB and Reel - safety equipment for free ascents in open water + surface attention getter
shears - line cutter, etc
whistle - surface attention getter
reflector - surface attention getter

You should have some sort of line cutter, etc on every dive
You should have a some surface attention getting devices on any ocean dives where you could get left behind or swept away from the boat.

I don't see anything on this list that I wouldn't take on an typical boat trip.

I carry all the mentioned stuff all the time, and more:

Cliped inside the right pocket:
Storm Whistle
6' oceanic 2 color sausage
Pelican mini strobe
2# ditchable weight

Cliped inside the left pocket:
A goody bag rolled and bungied
2# ditchable weight

Dive Alert on the inflator

Mirror cliped and bungied on the lower chest strap

DR mini Z-knife on the right shoulder strap

An Ocean master titanium knife on the inside right leg

1 UK SL6 cliped inside the tight pocket, and in night dives add 2 UK Mini Q 40 on the mask, 1 UK SL4 as backup cliped and bungied to the plate and a cyalume stick on the tank

Torpedo surface float tethered with a 250' reel to a D-ring on the lower tank strap (very easy access and no side pulling from the float)

Either a speargun or a digital cannon s40 is the main course of the dive, never bring both on the same dive. When not handling the main course, it's cliped to the scooter ring.

I wouldn't dive without any of these items, I allways dive on the Atlantic ocean and the next stop to the north is Bermuda.

I'm saving for a McMurdo GPS locator that plan on carrying along on every dive too
