First, a little background: my girlfriend and myself will be celebrating five years together on the weekend of Oct 23-24. I’ll be diving with the Monterey Bay Sea Otters dive club on the morning of the 23rd, and we will be going to the aquarium for their Halloween party that night, so I wanted to pick a nice place within easy walking distance of both Breakwater and the Aquarium.

So, keeping these requirements in mind, I selected the Cannery Row Inn but I haven’t been able to find any sort of reviews on the place. So, I wanted to pose the question to everyone, is this a nice place?

Their website advertises fireplaces and balconies with ocean views, and the location is great, so I’ve made a reservation – but I would really appreciate some opinions from anyone who might have stayed there. Considering just how close this place is to the Breakwater, I’m figuring some divers have used this hotel before.

Thanks in advance.

If you are comfortable with that price, I'd go to the Portola Plaza Hotel (ask for the AAA rate, if you are a member of AAA). Easy from BW, a five min. stroll to the Wharf, and as you know BW isn't really that far from the BW.

Even a lowest cost room there (the streetside rooms) are quite nice.

I thought about it, but Portola is running 240-250 a night, while the Cannery Row Inn is running 170 a night. This is kind of a special occasion, so I might think about it, but, according to tripadvisor.com, Portola isn't worth the price - four star price for a three star hotel, that kind of thing.

Yeah, take a look at this. It just doesn't seem to be worth it.

Wow...the prices must have gone way high at Portola in the past six weeks. I was there six weeks ago, in a streetside room, for just over $150. A few weeks before that, I was there, in the same room, for $109.

Can't speak for the Cannery Row Inn, but the Otter in is owned by the same company and is 3 blocks up Foam St. It's usually the same price. According to cheaptickets.com though it's $399 for your date. My room on Labor Day weekend was $180.

It was nice enough. No balcony on mine. Gas fireplace. Jacuzzi. The ocean view on the second floor was pretty sweet. I'd recommend it.

Yeah, I thought about the Otter Inn as well. When I was first shopping, the price was 299 through Orbitz and I don't think I can bring myself to pay that much for anything less then 4-5 stars. I've heard the Otter Inn doesn't rate that highly, but I certainly can't speak from personal experience.

FWIW, when I saw this room pop up in Orbitz for 170 per night, I grabbed it pretty quickly - even though I usually check tripadvisor.com just to make sure that I'm not going to be staying in an overpriced motel 6. I think my money will be well spent at the Cannery Row Inn but I would just like to hear someone who has actually stayed there that can confirm my feelings.

LOL...as a public school teacher, I don't splurge very often and I like to make sure that I'm getting my money's worth when I do decide to fire up the Visa card!

Just a guess, but I bet Cannery Row Inn is similar in quality to Otter. In other words, Motel 6 with a view. Not at all fancy. I think the carpenters used duct tape and chewing gum. Reviews I read were terrible. It was comfortable enough though.

I was glad to have earplugs. The gawdawful music from Sly McFly's was loud in my room.

Hope it works out for ya. Can't beat the location. You'd think somebody around has stayed there.

And you stayed at the Otter Inn? Yeah, 300 a night is too much for that place.

I do hope this place is quieter and, yes, the location is great. I'm really surprised that no one has stayed there, but perhaps for divers, it just isn't thought about. Kind of like those other areas in Lobos outside of Whalers and Bluefish, eh?
