I am glad you started this thread. Thanks for bringing this new model to my attention.

I also am interested to hear feedback from folks who have tried it in the field, err, under the field, err, in the water.

I ended up buying one on Friday night as I was going to Nanaimo to dive the Cape Bretton.

So far I really like it. Given the size of the Bretton (400 + feet long, stack at 60+ feet, deck at 85 with the mud around 140) the light still didn't penetrate from the deck to the bottom of the engine room. However, it was noticably brighter than the C8 of my buddy.

I am still waiting for the other handle to come in, I want to take the pistol grip off :)

So far, great light.

I'm looking to get a LED Primary light for night / wreck / possible cavern diving... how does the Shockwave LED compare with this? I see they are both rated at 170 lumens, and heres what I've gathered from online specs and whatnot (warning: may or may not be accurate):

UK C8 eLed Plus
10 w (2x5)
170 Lumens high (10/4 hours air/water)
60 Lumens low (??? hours)
39 oz
500 foot depth rating
current regulated (bright & constant, but when it dies, it dies)
$114 @ leisurepro

Shockwave LED
9w (3x3)
170 Lumens / 12 hours high
118 Lumens / 20 hours low beam
300 foot depth rating
986 grams (34.7 oz)
no current regulation (not constant brightness, fades to a slow death, but lasts longer)
"wide beam pattern"
$89 @ Leisurepro

Any thoughts from someone whose seem them both?

Rob

Excellent writeup, thanks for digging that up. This is an interesting comparison, as these two seem to be the leading contendors for bright LED primary lights in this price range (sub $120 or so). Unless anyone else know of another?? The one big flaw with the flashlight review writeup, is that he ran both lights out of the water. UK acknowledges a large difference in performance because of their heatsinking, so this does make it difficult to compare. But regardless, here's the simplistic #s as I'm reading them:

UK C8 eLED Plus: Throw=43.47 Output=80 @ 100%
Princeton Tec Shockwave LED: Throw=50.99 Output=120 @ 100%

One number can draw from these measurements, is that the Shockwave has a 17% wider throw. Using their posted formula for a rough approximation of Lumens (multiply output by 1.39), we have:

UK: 111 lumens, Princeton: 169 lumens

If you look at the discharge curve, the UK quickly diminishes to about 80% output (again, air cooled! underwater should be significantly higher), and maintains roughly 80% until it dies at 4:30. 80% of 111 lumens, is about 88 lumens sustained.

The Princeton Shockwave LED, with no regulation, quickly drops to about 60% output, and then slowly creeps down from there. Averaging it over the same 4:30 hours as the UK, we get roughly 55% of total output for 4:30, which is 93 Lumens.

I guess the big question is, exactly how much does the underwater cooling effect increase the output of the UK?

I find it a bit odd that UK says that their light has a 10 hour run time out of the water, and ran for only 5 hours in the test. If the princeton teck light was regulated it would be the light I would go for. I do like that you can change from a pistol grip to a lantern grip on the UK

Thanks you for updated UK C8 Led info....Bjorn

The manufacters' web sites rate them both to 170 lumens max. We need a real world head to head review. The UK light is more expensive I noticed. It appears that the UK light also has a wider beam looking at the flash light review site. - Dirk
