Has anyone successfully used a Nautilus Marine Rescue GPS nexGen in rough waters?

I can only find the 2nd gen manual on their site, not the next gen, any idea if they are the same?

Would it be safe to assume that if you are not in the US, Europe or Canada that international functionality applies?

You won't have a ship MMSI if you show up at an international liveaboard. In theory you could ask the LOB for their MMSI but you'd have to reprogram it at the beginning of every trip and remove it afterwards - which seems rife with opportunity for mistakes.

The manual is the same. None of the next gen improvements affect the manual.
Your questions are answered on page 7 of the manual; you tell it what region you are in.

Appreciate all the answers! Do you see any reason NOT to broadcast both AIS and DSC (Aside form where it's not allowed?) And quite honestly, in my head I wonder if the radios on boats in countries that do not allow DSC still listen for DSC by default. I'd rather break the law and be alive because I broadcast a DSC alert than be a dead law abiding citizen.

Let's say I did not program the correct MMSI on a trip. Wouldn't it still broadcast AIS to all other vessels as well after 30 minutes? Unless i'm misreading the manual.

You can look up a lot of MMSI numbers at Ship Station List and at Ships List with Details and Live Maps. Setting the MMSI uses the Nautilus GPS app on your phone. Not hard.

I saw one of mine used last week. We had a ripping current with about 2ft seas and split the divers into two teams. Captain was watching the bubbles off the bow and didn't notice that one team did a blue water safety stop in the ripping current came up about a good mile or two behind the boat. They fired off a Nautilus and an MOB popped up on the chart plotter's screen. Captain untied (leaving my team a buoy on the anchor line), went after them and everything ended well.

Setting the MMSI is actually quite easy. The app walks you through the process. If the message is not received correctly by the nautilus it will not give a confirmation flash. So you go back and check all your input numbers and try again. Until recently, the app required you to do it twice in US territories but it no longer does. I have six of them and currently they are all set for our main boat. When we go on one of our smaller boats, I'll change the MMSI accordingly or if we go offshore on a charter I'll just blank the MMSI if I can't get one from the captain. I always explain it to the captain along with what he should expect to see if we set it off. IF they let me I set it off after putting their MMSI in so that they can see it without alarming everyone else in the area. I know one captain out of Galveston was going to look into getting a few to keep on the boat for his future divers.

Your understanding is mostly correct.....except for testing in the European Region:

Non-emergency “Position Advisory” function is prohibited. The Nautilus Marine Rescue GPS does not comply with Class M regulations. As a result, using the device to send location updates to nearby vessels for convenience or coordination is prohibited in affected countries.​

Also, it depends on what you mean by a "MOB alert." There are two possible transmissions, AIS and DSC. The latter is disallowed in some regions. All boats (if so equipped) get the AIS transmission; the DSC transmissions is only sent in some regions and only received if the boat is DSC-equipped.

So it all depends on what region you are in and what boat you are on.

yeah i believe in setting up the MMSI on the device i have to specify the location which should select what is legal and not. With that said, when I do a test it sends that test to ALL radios in range, not just the defined MMSI?
