Is mid-June a "good time" to go (and hopefully see some)? I know there are no sure things, but that's when I can go.
*open to any other suggestions too- this is a family vaca. with some diving for me, and an intro-dive for the kids.
Thanks!

I went in mid-June three years ago and we saw some on both dives. I tried going two years ago, but the weather turned us around half way there. We dove a couple of new dive sites on the back side of Lanai instead. So you never know if you will make to the dive site.

According to a friend who works for Lahaina Divers, summer is the best time to see Hammerheads.

If you're diving the Hammerheads you're diving with Lahaina Divers. I'd stay in the West Maui area also for convenience.
an intro-dive for the kids.
They'd also be my recommendation in that area for boat dives to Molokini - they have the bigger Newton dive boats for the trip - they're easy boarding also in case it's a little rough there - only has been for us once. For shore diving the Sheraton Black Rock site is an easy entry off their beach. Kapalua Bay is another easy entry shallow site.

Thanks diversteve. Kaanapali condo is booked. Waiting for email back from Lahaina Divers. Thinking about how to do some shore dives in the immediate area (Black Rock/Airport).

For my mother's 75th B-Day, I am taking her to Kona to visit some of her high school friends next summer (2014). So I have plenty of time to plan a nice vactaion for all of us. I want to hit the water..alot :) . Are there any sites on Kona that might be a good site for Hammerheads?

Black Rock has a beach operator on-site for tanks. At least they did when we were there last some years ago.

Maui Dive Shop rents tanks - both their Lahaina Gateway Mall and Kahana Gateway shops. Not at the Kaanapali site as that's a kiosk. Maui Dive Shop Locations | Dive Shops on Maui | Maui Dive Stores | Surf Stores on Maui - any that say scuba rental do. I'm almost positive Lahaina Divers does also - I rented there once to beach dive one afternoon.

I'm not clear on your post - are the non-divers certified or are you looking for a Discovery Dive? I assumed the former in my previous post. Lahaina Divers or Tiny Bubbles do Intro Dives in the afternoon near shore off Maui. Tiny Bubbles also does shore diving for certified divers - they don't have a boat. There's also Scuba Mike - he dives all over. IDK anything about him.

If you go south, both B&B Scuba or Maui Dreams Dive Co. in Kihei rent tanks also. MDDC does escorted shore diving as does Shaka Doug (Shaka Divers) in the Kihei/Wailea area also.

From smellzlikefish's 2010 post here: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/shark-forum/349810-kona-kauai-shark-diving.html

The best hammerhead diving on Kona is deep south. There you have an fair chance at seeing hammerheads. Your best bet is to hop on a long-range charter, unfortunately, most don't go far enough. You really have to dive between Miloli'i and South Point to have a significant chance of encountering hammerheads. From what I have gathered, "significant chance" means roughly 50/50. I've done 5 dives there and have had an encounter only once.

We just returned from Maui, I did the Hammerhead dive on Tuesday. Only got to see one myself at a pretty far distance. Another group on our boat got to see several and some pretty close. The current on our first dive was pretty strong, second dive not as bad. Overall great diving and great dive company "Lahaina Divers". Just real sad to be hm :(
