I'd say the only danger was that you might notice he was goofing off and not working.

What the hell ever, whats there will stay until the next storm. :p I've spearfished the pier on many occassions, its produces.

Agreed it can hold some really nice fish!!!. And well worth the walk most of the time,or boat ride which I prefere More than likely the Contractor over the site is skittish over his liability Insurance while he is over it, I know the feeling:D

Liability insurance is one thing (and I can't speak on that topic) but I moved to the Gulf area about 6 months ago and I have noticed that this area has some real nice people but they live a MUCH slower and cautious life than that of other areas of the country.

Nothing wrong with that but when a construction worker, in an effort of being SAFE (in his eyes) interferes with our good FUN then it's an issue. If no laws are broken (can they really enforce a no diving law on a pier when it's no longer a pier?) then they infringe on OUR rights to have fun and enjoy our natural resources.

I LOVE this part of the country. The outdoor fun that we can have is like no other in the country and I am glad to be here!!!! I'll slow down eventually and might even get assimilated into this overly-Cautious society but I'm not going to hold my breath.... unless I'm free diving!! :D

I would say it's still a pier... just not functional as a commercial operation of its intended purpose (fishing). yeah it's got parts missing, but it's still a pier.

They could still enforce the law if they wanted to.... it just appears they aren't.

I see your point Mike. A pier Piling is still a pier piling even though part of it doesn't reach the shore. Sure enough....

First off please note this is not my job site

Stop and think for a second of all the Lawsuit happy people out there today. Last summer if you can recall there was a diver smashed to death by a pylon while he was down inspecting one, a pylons somehow got him. From day one when our bids are approved and work is started we are responsible for any and all accidents that occur on the site

In the demo stage there many underwater danger such as busted lift cables, pointed and rusted rebar, widow makers ready to fall at any given time. Ever seen a Pylon break loose during a swing? Or see a man loose control of a jet it’s funny after it is over with but not until.

I’m not trying to be nasty or nothing but if I was to catch one of my guys not warning the public to say clear he would be looking for another job.

Take a second and don’t judge them till you have walk in their shoes:D

You make GREAT point on that Tom. I didn't hear of that Guy last year. and you are correct our society has changed into one of great liability (Sue Happy). I wasn't meaning that in a derogatory way AT ALL!!! I should have said "when THAT worker" Don't want to start anything here just making comments and looking for a place to spear when I can't go out in a boat.

The best thing to do is call The Alabama Marine Resources in Gulf Shores. They should able to interpret the law and tell you what you can and cant do...If I have a chance Ill talk to them tomorrow at work....

Jw, That would be cool. I have a friend with whom I have dove with several times overseas. Malta and Gulf of Oman. and I'd like to get him into the water again without the time needed to dive from a boat. We both have spear guns and would like, if possible to shoot for some dinner too while there. I wonder too, If snorkeling would be just as easy to do since the depth is so shallow, but if Vis is iffy then diving would be the best, IMHO...

Thanks for all the info here. It's helped me get back into the sport.

No problem here. I hope I didn't come across wrong:D

For a quick fix we use to dive the east side of the bridge at the pass. You need to stay deep as possible and watch out for the Hook-in-liners. Many a meals has been taken around the second and third set of Pylons. Time the tides and watch the boat lane. The Red fish sure can be tempting somtimes. Now you know any leftovers must be brought to me:wink:
