Lenses both sides in the water !!!

DiveVue - Mount glasses to your dive mask.
In the page you can read :
When selecting cheap reading glasses, we suggest selecting glasses with a magnification 0.5 less to equal your existing reading glasses (i.e., +2.0 down to a +1.5 magnification) .

That is wrong !

Air has an refraction index about 1,000 :
water about 1,33 : and cheap glas about 1,5 .
The difference between glas and water is much less then between glas and
air .Therefore, the glasses (the visual aid) lose most of their optical refractive power. A pair of glasses for + 2 diopters in water is probably not to buy.
The lenses would have a short focal length , would be thick for a sufficient field of view , and will have a lot of optical errors .
Or you can take two lenses with air in between. But this glases must then be pressure-resistant.
For deep freediving competition , however, there are contact lenses with very high diopters whose curved front is in the water.

A little ways back, I suffered an illness that has affected my vision and now I can't see things up close like being able to read my computer and other gauges. My long distance vision is still relatively still good, I just need correction up close mainly. I am going to see my doctor in a week and find out my exact prescription needs. Since this is all new to me, I am seeking a little advice. I dive a mask that is no longer made (I actually have two of them) and I absolutely love the mask, therefore, I want a prescription lens put in both of the the masks (want to carry a back-up). I don't know this is even possible, but my mask is a single lens mask and I was wondering if anyone out there could make a full lens the exact size & dimensions as my mask and either replace the factory lens with the prescription lens or make the lens the exact size & dimensions as the factory lens and bond it to the factory' lens? If so, what companies would you recommend?

I greatly appreciate your time & assistance.

they told me you could not put a lens on a single lens mask. could not tell you why.

Other than that i have my prescription lens in my mask really like it worth the money !

You can send your mask to Custom Prescription Dive Masks . They make lenses in any prescription and bond them to the inside of the existing scuba mask glass. They do sell new masks, but as long as your mask has flat tempered glass, they can use it.

Once you have your prescription, give them a call.

I've had 3 masks made by them over the years as my prescription has changed. They all work perfectly.

There is probably a fear that the distance between the eyes and the lenses will increase too much. With simple + or - diopter lenses this does not make much difference in my experience, but there are more complex corrections and I do not know if it becomes more critical here. You can try holding your normal glasses at a greater distance and tilting them to see how sensitive your interpupillary distance and angle are. However, this only applies if you want your diving glasses to have similar optics.

Thank you Sir, for your reply. I greatly appreciate you!

I am not sure if this would work for you or not. You may have already tried. I am blind in my left eye…completely and need bifocals for my right. I tried the DiveOptix stick on and removeable lenses ( I only need one ) and the vision was remarkable. No haze, no out of focus and just chose my reading glasses strength. I went diving in Alexander Springs in April and my visibility was great..

I have to hard half-and-half disagree about your point wherein if you have a dedicated prescription mask and your prescription changes, you need to replace the whole thing. I need heavy prescription lenses in my glasses to see overall, I have been diving my same Tusa Paragon mask (two separate lenses, not the single lens ones) frame since I have started diving and its still going strong. The best part is that I have the option to easily order individual lenses of different oculus dexter (OD, right eye) and oculus sinister (OS, left eye) strengths. They do them in intervals of -0.5 but its a very close approximation of my most recent prescription. Each lens is $60 and will last me about two years, especially since the water also helps to further magnify my vision. The best part is that when I get my new prescription, I can easily disassemble the frame, remove the lenses, and replace them with new ones. And at a significantly cheaper rate than getting a new mask. I speak strictly from my personal experience with Tusa masks and I am unsure if other mask brands offer these options and flexibility. Proceed at your own discretion, but know you have different options, this just happens to be what works for me.

I'm not sure if you are responding to me, but if so go back to the first page on this thread where I recommend and post links for pre-made prescription masks and interchangeable lenses including Tusa.

I get custom lenses because my prescription is much stronger than anything offered in the premade masks or lenses. I also don't get a new mask every year just because my prescription changes slightly. More like every 7 or 8 years when my vision underwater is noticeably compromised.

I actually use a Tusa mask, so I could just get my new lenses bonded to new no-prescription replacement lenses from Tusa, but I prefer to get a new mask and keep the old one as a backup.
