are you talking about training or just diving? @PfcAJ can weigh in, but I believe a canister is part of the training requirements for certain courses
I understand that some instructors require cabled lights. It adds complexity to the s drill. But you can buy pretty cheap cables lights.

But thats exactly the Point im curious about.
I absolutely understand the need for canister lights and the respective burn time in the old days.

With the modern technology I can have the appropriate burntime, even for longer cave dives, without the need for a canister on the hip, so there seems to be no valid argument, why it would be mandatary (if this is the case).

Tbone, interresting point of view (not a canister light)... how is it defined. Since the light i´m talking about has a cable connection and a canister, only that it is small enough to mount the whole system on the hand. Anyhow, I could as well mount it on the hip (or anywhere else) just that up to now I do not see the reason.

I think you have answered your own question. It's very simple. You know what your burn time is and you know what your dive plan is. If you can cover it with a non canister light then there isn't a problem. If the dive time requires more burn time than what is available then the canister should be placed on the right hip.

When proceeding into Tech 1 or Cave 1 dives I doubt if wrist mounted lights can provide enough burn time (with reserve) for the dives required. I do not know of any wrsit mounted lights that last 3 to 5 hours. Maybe I missed something. However, If such a light exists it's your call to use it. GUE won't oppose to using it on a real dive.

However, most of the drills in Fundamentals are meant to improve your platform by increasing your stress level (divehard, train harder). For instance, carrying your SMB an spool seperate makes no sense on a real dive, but makes life pretty diffcult for a student deploying it. Even more when you're sharing gas and have to deal with a cable light and be aware of your teammates all at the same time.

Therefore a cable light ads complexity which help to achive the traning goals. At least, that's how I see it.

I don't think GUE would require a can light provided you can get sufficient output and burn time out of some hand held jobbie. A can light does have distinct benefits, however.

The Scurion light referenced in this thread looks really weird and without seeing it up close I have no idea if it would be a workable solution.

I wouldn't recommend buying a 2.5hr light. 5.5 is probably ok.

Focus 2.0 is way better than focus 1 though.

Agreed. So would you use the Focus 2.0 on a cave dive as your primary?

Me personally? I use a custom switchless 2.0 on an e/o cord with a normal battery pack (lithium) with a switch.

I think e/o rocks, I want the switch protected, and I prefer a standard goodman handle vs that grappling hook the lights come with.

Understood about the grappling hook. What I'm trying to get as from a brightness/burn time point of view, would you use this light in a cave? So let's say you are at some cave, about to go on a dive. Somehow, when you test your normal primary, it is dead for whatever reason. Someone hands you a fully charged Focus 2.0 modified with a Goodman handle. What I'm trying to find out is, if you as a cave diver (which I am not at this point), think that the capabilities of the Focus 2.0 are good enough. I don't own one, but I may consider it in the future (or something similar in capability).
