...I'm still here, so I guess I dodged a scallop. What I've heard is no mussels, oysters, or clams. Since with scallops, you eat only the adductor muscle, there is little or no risk.

Muscle tissue- that's the key. You're right. The toxins accumulate primarily in the other tissues which are eaten when you do mussels but not scallops.

I still avoid any filterers- organisms or organs- in my diet, although I miss my mussels!

Not to rebut you PhotoJT but are you sure you saw a 10 foot great white at Big Rock? I have dove at that spot 70+ times and the biggest thing I have seen was a 4ft leopard shark. The pinnacle or little rock is about 200 yards from shore with a depth of 20-25 feet depending on the tide. I'm not calling you a liar but I find it hard to believe. I live in the area and did not hear any reports of great white sightings in the area.

Ummm, not to be a jerk, but didn't you just get one via TJ?

I don't think depth has anything to do with it, given the recent sightings at San Onofre and the catch off the Hermosa pier.

Anyway..... It may be a fish story,m but it's a good one

Well, I meant any other reports other than the one on this board. There may very well have been a ten foot great white there. I just find it hard to believe. I talked to a diver there two years ago at this spot who said he caught a 20lb lobster there. He may have, but.... Another guy told me he was kayaking at zuma and saw a great white jump completely out of the water pull a sea lion off the buoy. Maybe....

Fish stories are great to hear but I guess I'm a little skeptical sometimes.

It would be nice to hear of any other scuba stories that were well, a little hard to believe.

While I may not have Phd after my name, my marine life identification skills are pretty good to excellent, and it was a white. Black eye, countershading, large girth, caudal keel. Male, between 8 to 12 feet. (Size is tough, water and mortal fear are excellent magnifiers, but it was a crapload bigger than me, and I'm 6'3")

I've dived there twice since then, and have seen nothing lager that a fat sheephead. So perhaps he was passing through.

We have sightings here on Catalina, but they seem to spread only among the dive and fishing community... the general public seems relatively unaware of them.

Well, one time, I was diving, and got scooped up by a huge mouth, next thing i know I am falling into a forest fire... err... oh, you heard that one already?

How about while working as a commercial diver, some jellies got into my suit.... er that one too?>

I'll get back to you ;)

the general public seems relatively unaware of them.

And we saw what happened (at least it didn't turn into the summer of the shark) when the general public does become aware of them (THERE ARE SHARKS IN THE OCEAN!!!!! NEWS AT 10!!!!!!!)
