I'm curious, is "GPO" common diver slang in the Pacific Northwest for these things? Do any other critters up there have nicknames or acronyms?
Yup, GPO "Giant Pacific Octopus"
Yes we have slang for other species. For example, we commonly refer to the Hexanchus Griseus as the "Six Gill".:D

And the Rhamphocottus richardsoni is a Grunt. The Grunt Sculpin is also frequently referred to as the "Spastic of the Sea". If you ever saw one swim, you would know why. They're always kind of crooked.
