Hello Sol Cal Divers,

The wife and I are planning a short trip to the So Cal region from the Sacramento area in October. We decided to try to dive a day or two while on out trip, so we were looking for some suggestions to your local shore dive sites that would be worth while. Just something simple and enjoyable since she is still new to diving. The time of our visit is going to be October 10th-15th, so I am unsure how weather, tides, or currents could affect the waters. My only So Cal diving experience is a bug trip on the Vision two years ago and we don't think that is an option due to the bug season. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks for your time,

An awesome day would be to visit Catalina's dive park. Easy diving, excellent facilities, great viz and several restaurants immediately available for post-dive beers!

A freebee shore dive would be with SouthCoastDivers.com. Great group. We meet every Saturday for a Laguna Beach Shore dive. A bit more rigorous and demanding (hoofing back/forth from car full of gear, stairs, surf zone entry/exit, etc.). Less viz than Catalina (about 15' in October) but very nice diving and we're done by 10:30! That helps if you have other Saturday plans.

Arguably, although not by many, Laguna Beach has the best shore diving in socal. Give it a try.

The Catalina island dive park, (you have to take the ferry) is the best option.

As runway said, the best option on the "mainland" is Shaw's cove or crescent cove in laguna beach.

The main thing effecting shore dives is high surf. this is not an issue at the catalina dive park. At laguna, you can check the conditions at Dive Conditions in Laguna Beach California

the diving at both laguna sites is straight out and to the right, you can't miss it.

Scott
