Will be in Ft Lauderdale / Pompano Beach area 3/21 - 3/24. Looking for good, affordable, family restaurants. I read a review in the Miami Herald a few months back for a Venezuela restaurant. I would like to get some seafood.

There are sooooo many restaurants in that area, it's hard to make recommendations. Personally, I love Spanish and Cuban food. There is a real Spanish restaurant, La Barraca, 115 S 20th Ave in Hollywood that is to die for. Real Spanish food prepared by real Spaniards, not suedo-cuban spanish. If you want some of the best Cuban, I recommend Don Arutro in Ft. Lauderdale, 1198 SW 27th Ave, it's right down from the Sheriffs office and is always full of cops. I'm not sure about the Venezuelan restaurant, but I do know of a Venezuelan bakery called the Bread Shop, 6301 N Andrews Ave. It has wonderful cafe, cachitos, empanadas, arepas, and sandwiches. I consider it a must stop.

I know there are also a plethora of Greek, Thai, Italian restaurants in the area also, just about anything you want. I hope these help you alittle.

This place was on the Food Channels "Dinners, drive-in, and dives"
Scully's Bookmarked it hoping to get back down that way.

Remember, if you are in FTL you are 25 miles from Miami; Pompano even further, so unless you are in Miami for some other reason, probably not worth it to make the drive.

But if you like latin food, no better place in the country for variety of cusines than Miami, especially for Spanish and Latin American (Mexican, not so much). Go to the Miami Herald on line, food section for many recommendations.

However, if you do find yourself there, one of the best seafood res't in S FL is Garcias, located on the Miami River, on NW South River Drive - not easy to find if you are not familiar with the area, but really excellent, very fresh and moderately priced. Plus you can sit outside and look at the Miami River.

2 of my favorites in FTL are 15th Street Fisheries (eat downstairs; cheaper menu from the same kitchen as upstairs) and Tarpon Bend.

If you are near downtown FTL, walk along Las Olas; lots of good choices there and a neat area to walk around.

Also, there are 2 local chains that have consistantly good fish, especially fresh dolphin/mahi; Flanigans and the Ale House - likely one fairly close to where you will be staying.

Also ask at your hotel. Sorry I can't help much with Pompano.

Scully's is great, but it is in South Miami. Not sure if you are looking to go that far. If you are I would recommend the Sports Grill. It's just down the street from Scully's, and the wings are worth the drive. The Special Grilled wings are the best there are IMO. If you like them really hot try the Miami Heat sauce. It will burn your eyes when they put it on the table. Good stuff!

Scully's is great, but its not worth an hour's drive from Pompano for what is basically really good pub type food -

From my home in Coconut Grove - sure!

Gotta try the Sports Grill - I'm sure I've passed it a thousand times.
