I had never been to Catalina, which is a bit embarrassing. Living in Sacramento (Nor Cal) for the past 35 years, I have dived all over Mexico, the Carribean, French Polynesia, Hawaii, and the Northern Channel Islands. My wife was in Europe for two weeks in mid-April, and with instructions that I could dive anywhere while she was gone where the water temp was <70 degrees, I decided to try Catalina.

I booked a dive guide thru ScubaLuv for Monday morning, and after checking in at the "downtown" dive shop I was introduced to Brian, an instructor with ScubaLuv. He drove me the three blocks to the dive park at Casino Point where we did two dives over the next three hours. The water temp was 60 deg, and I was warm in my brand spanking new 7mm wetsuit, hood, and booties. No problem with the cold water (my definition of "cold".)

The dives were great, with lobsters, that really BIG 400# sea bass, and the multitudes of Garibaldi and Sheeps Head Fish (I think that is the common name), along with one very shy octopus hiding out in a crevice. Viz was 70+. I think there were 4 divers in the water on a morning when the topside temp was 84 degrees. It was a Monday in mid-April, but go figure. All in all, it was a very good day of diving. Thanks to Brian and ScubaLuv.

He doesn't know how to measure viz....70ft viz on Catalina? Must have been narked...but who cares, if that's what you think, then so be it :)

Personally, I have been to the dive park a few times with 70+ foot viz. Definitely not very common, but one time in September I could basically see the bottom at 100 feet from the surface by the corner buoy:)
