Dan Gibson:
That suit will be a problem when you hit about 80 ft. That's where my old 6.5 mil Harvey's semi dry stopped being warm. It let me know how bad I wanted a drysuit. It didn't take long to make that purchase. About 2 month's if I remember correctly.
Blah blah blah....warm warm warm...

80' is fine at gilboa with a wetsuit if you're used to being cold. BTW...once you get below 80 at gilboa the temp doesn't change much.

Did two dives there yesterday. Viz was pretty decent, in the 30-40 foot range. Temps were still in the high 50's up to 40 feet, and down to the upper 40's deeper. But since we were the only two divers there we saw more catfish and turtles than I've seen there before. We came out of the rear of the plane on our second dive and there was a big old cat siting on on starboard wing. It was pretty cool.

I'm hurt!! :hurt: Why didn't you give me a call??? OK--I promise that I'll use deodorant. Just kidding Andy.:peace: But don't forget me--I can be there in less than an hour and you know I love Gilboa during the week.:icosm05:

I know. But the suit just wasn't the same when I hit 80'. The 6.5 mil felt like a 1 mil at that point.

As we all know, there is a reason for getting cooler at depth even if the water temp doesn't change much.

That wetsuit compression with depth is a pain isn't it? :)

Sorry I didn't call Denny. It was a last minute kind of thing. We'll get out there yet. The DVD is awesome BTW.

Dan, I've had my Mares in 42 degree water in Lake Superior. And while I wasn't what you'd call toasty, it was bearable. But I'm sure a dry suit is on the horizon.

The problem isn't that the suit isn't warm. I'm sure it's similar to my old Harvey's 6.5 mil semidry. I just couldn't find a way to keep it a 6.5 mil at anything over 80' in depth. Gotta love those drysuits.

Absolutely. The surface isn't too good either if you plan on more than one dive and it's blowing pretty hard outside.

My own rule is any further north than Florida keys is a dry suit dive ;)

That pretty much sums up my last 3 or four years of diving. Other than Florida or the Carribean, I don't think I have done any wetsuit diving outside playing a victim in rescue diver courses. Don't want to tear up that drysuit.

....windy surface intervals in Munising. That's the reason that my two piece 7mm Hyperstrech only lasted a half a wreck season before it turned into an Andy's DS-1, LOL.

Since I lack the money and vacation time to dive points South (I spend too much of both on the Great Lakes!), I have only used my tropical wetsuit for pool work with students this year. It is doubtful that it will see open water this year.
