diverbrian:
Whatever happens, I feel assured that Mike is trying to do what is fair to everyone.
There isn't much more that I can say other than that I wish him well and that he has made his quarry unaccessible to us in the winter. For his sake I hope he doesn't have to close but as far as I'm concerned it is closed.
The new policy seems a clear statement that either you dive there often, not at all or pay a very high price for the diving you do.
Other than the fact that it feels like a slap in the face to me it's not a big deal. I have plenty of places to dive especially in a year like this when there isn't any ice any place around here.
There's a quarry 20 minutes from my house that I can open up and have the place to myself for $10 per diver.
Blue springs is an hour and a half away and open 24/7 for $10 per diver.
I have lake Maxinkucky 1/2 hour from home
Mermet is further than Gilboa but it just became more economical.
There are other Ohio quarries open also and one that's open 24 hours a day according to the web site.
I have the Missouri caves that are twice as far away as Gilboa but other than that they are free to dive.
I would prefer to give the quarry diving business to Mike but he has made the cost differenial so huge that it's not a realistic option especially if I need to teach a class. Surely he knows of some of these other options and took that into consideration in deciding his policy.
Other than teaching, I go to quarries to socialize as much as anything. As it stands now if I go to Gilboa for a get together I'll pay the $5 non-diver fee to visit with folks and skip the diving.
