I totally get what one poster said about longevity--finding something that keeps you into the diving besides just getting wet, although there's nothing wrong with that. I have the relevant cards, advanced ow, nitrox, rescue, search and recovery, rescue, O2 and AED, so I began asking, "what now?" One of the things I love about diving is the opportunity to learn new things and the next step had become getting Master Diver (naui) and technical but further than that I would like to get into scientific diving (getting the AAUS cert) and using that to assist in various projects like fish counts, environmental assessments, archaeology sounds like it would be fun, too. I have just finished the intro to tech class and the next course is adv nitrox and deco, and the cost is $600. That's the same at it costs to dive a weekend in San Diego. I'm not saying it's not worth it, but that is what it costs.
Thanks to all for your ideas and help. One of the things that I think has been primary in my learning about diving as much as I could, especially early on has been Scubaboard.
