...but had he died I would have to agree he would have been considered just another statistic of what not to do at the time.

He would have still been a pioneer, just with less accolades. All those guys cave diving back then were pioneers, obviously not all of them lived long enough to see the benefits of progression. Atleast we could learn from their deaths.

What's the big deal if an OW diver goes SM. If they are dumb enough to get hurt in SM then they are dumb enough to do it BM too.

Yeah, but in BM they can't get wedged up so far and make the whole cave smell funny.
