Sheck did some very stupid things in his early career

From your perspective almost 30+ years later sure.

But nobody had done 400ft+ dives on air before. There was nobody to serve as a role model. Nobody really understood extreme narcosis and they definitely considered helium exotic. There was no source of information like yourself or SB on what was or wasn't stupid either.

Stop judging history by today's standards.

The deceased didn't need to self teach himself how to cave dive like most of the now dead cave pioneers did. We have courses to eliminate the worst pitfalls like the horrible bouyancy shown in the videos.

Its been a deep air thread since this yahoo went missing, possibly in a 160' deep cave.

Be carefull calling him a yahoo. I said "can you say stroke" in an earlier thread, and it got deleted for name calling (even though I did not address it to a specific person). Some of the mods are pretty quick on the delete trigger.

What did I tout as fact that was untrue?

Fact remains, he did some damn stupid things and nearly (probably should have) died as a result several times.

There's a huge difference between stupid and ignorance. Stupid is getting yourself kacked in a cave without the correct gear or training. Ignorance is being one of the first guys to actively engage in modern day cave diving and having to learn what works, and what doesn't. Foolish isn't what I'd call the pioneers either.

Again, you seem not be able to comprehend ;)

Definition of COMPREHENSION
1a : the act or action of grasping with the intellect : understanding b : knowledge gained by comprehending c : the capacity for understanding fully <mysteries that are beyond our comprehension>

Yes, that one. What's your point? Did I say it was a cave dive?

My point is there was alot to be learned in that instance. We don't really learn anything from some dude, with no training, with less than adequate gear, possibly getting himself killed in a cave. At most, it just reaffirms what we've already known.

My point is...

It's still an interesting point... Anyone who has read Sheck Exley's Caverns Measureless To Man, would know that he was very lucky not to have died several times during his early diving career; if he had died earlier than he did, he would most likely have been written off on SB as a reckless idiot rather than a cave diving legend

/shrug

... you're completely wrong.

He just went through the natural progression of cave diving, so we can all start with much more understanding and preparedness for this environment. There's nothing stupid about it. Someone had to do it then, nobody has to do it now. Why thats above your understanding is beyond me.

:) It won't be the end of the world if "yahoo" gets deleted from my post :)

This whole thing was textbook strokery. From the stupid dive plan (air to dive + air deco) to the gear (wetsuit isn't enough for this dive), to the sily mapping techniques, to the hideous videos.

I get warned about twice a month by a mod who doesn't even tech dive, for my comments in the tech section. It's silly that we can't call a spade a spade.

If you two don't stop your trying to prove who has the bigger package this thread is going to get closed or moved. Stop locking horns already and let things roll please.

I laughed, because my last name is Bull.

we can't call a stroke a stroke either. that's what this guy was (is?).

@ Bug
Well alrighty then! I guess you have good reason to be so full of yourself then....:D

I don't know about everyone else but it is getting more and more difficult to figure out who is the target at the moment..... deepswim dude or lost in the cave dude....:dontknow:
Now back to lurking:coffee:
