cerich, I have one more question. Whatever happened to the Hog balanced piston? I have nothing against diaphragms, but I prefer pistons. Pirahna still has them in their website but I don't see it in yours.

I wanted a piston with a cold water kit, so started to simply add a cold kit to the BPZ1, then as it looked like my new piston would be ready I killed off the old BP1...then along the way we started to play with the new piston design, nothing revolutionary at all, mostly little tweaks and then got sidetracked into the second stages, then Titanium...and then the factory told me they had enough parts for 150 BP1 regs made so I said sure send them, 8 months after I killed the product... :-)

Now the new HOG piston is the BP2, better performance, cold water kit/boot will come with the reg but not installed (dealer installed). It will also make it into the EDGE line in Titanium only with the new EDGE Second Stage in Titanium and Ti Swivel on a EDGE Flex hose and retail at $699.

Yeah, i prefer pistons and brunettes

So basically regulator design and production by the AADHD crowd...lol

Should be here and shipping jan 1 or so

Thanks for the update. I'll keep my eyes open.

Back to the original post. I have both old school g250's and a hog. I love my g250's but for my money I would recommend the hog.

I acquired a used ebay G250 Graphite and a Hog Duroc since the last post in this thread. It got to the point were used ebay G250s were more expensive than brand new Hogs. So I took advantage of black friday discount pricing and got a hog. I haven't dove the Hog yet but here are some initial observations.

Diameter, and consequently diaphragm, of the Hog is smaller. Nonetheless the Hog is noticeable heavier. There is a fairly heavy solid brass heat sink and the adjustment knob is much heavier than G250's. The Hog also has an aluminum ring that screws in and holds the front face cover in place. I think these are the main culprits for the extra weight. Also, the graphite composite is comparatively lightweight.

One of the very few things I do not like about the G250 is the very skinny adjustment knob stem. It's just too easy to bend it accidentally and practically impossible to straighten it up again. Yes, the bent knobs do work fine, but they're ugly. The heavier Hog adjustment knob seems impossible to bend.

Out of the box, the Hog's adjustment knob was not turning buttery smooth. The venturi lever was, though. So I took it all apart, but left the orifice inside in its own factory setting so that I could get an idea of how well tuned they come from factory.

There was little lubricant anywhere, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The poppet and the two tiny metric orings were well lubricated with white O2 compatible grease. I liberally applied Christo Lube to the adjustment knob oring and threads and now it does turn buttery smooth.

The lp seat is mushroom style and it is interchangeable with those used on the G250s. In fact, I replaced the factory lp seat with a generic Trident LP seat that I had for my G250s.

I'll wait a for a year or 2 to try the 2.5mmx1mm orings in the poppet. The schematic says these are 2mmx1mm, so we'll see how well it works. Other than that, it uses pretty straightforward and easy to get oring sizes, in what seems to be viton duro 75 or 70.

The reg is easy to work with. Unlike the G250, you do have to take the barrel out if you want to get to the poppet and the lp seat, but it's pretty easy to do so. It's all held together by a nut that screws in the same place where the lp hose screws in. This nut seems to be unnecessarily wide -- it only leaves 4 threads for the lp hose to screw in, whereas the G250s have 6 threads available for the hose.

This is a slight concern for me because I keep all my 2nd stages only hand tightened in case I need to swap the underwater. The two extra turns means there's a lower likelihood for a second stage to fall off by itself. And the wide nut just adds weight to an already heavy reg.

I plan to dive the hog for the first time this weekend with a Mk10. I suspect that all my fussing about the weight will turn out to be a non-issue under diving conditions. I'll keep you posted.

I think some posts were lost on this thread during the last server crash.

So I dove the Hog a couple of times already. As expected the extra weight was not an issue underwater. I dove the hog with the orifice set at the factory setting and it wasn't breathing as nice as my G250s. So I fine tuned the orifice to the point were there is a ver minuscule free flow when the adjustment knob is opened all the way. Turn down the adjustment knob a slight bit, and the free flow stops. Breathing improved, but it still was not as good as the G250. IMHO it gets close, but it does not breath as nicely as a G250.

Adjustment of the hog orifice is done with a hex allen wrench. I like this better than the flathead of the g250. The hog orifice was buttery smooth, particularly when compared to my G250s with the crammed oversize -010 orings in the orifice. I also like that the venturi assist lever is big and very easy to handle with heavy gloves. My old G250s have this tiny venturi "knob" that I oftentimes do not know for certain if it is activated it or not after attempting to turn it with heavy gloves.

One thing I did not like about the Hog is that the range for the adjustment knob is much more limited than the G250. The Hog only gives you 1.25 turns whereas the G250 gives you 5 turns.

In conclusion, I think the Hog is a great value for the price, but I would not say that it is a superior performer over the G250 graphite. However, because of the good difference in price, I think people might be better served buying a new Hog with warranty and support than venturing into buying a used ebay G250 for a slightly higher price than a new hog. There are plenty of times when you make good buys on ebay, but you always run the risk of buying something with damages.

Comparing to new G250Vs I do not think that the slight performance advantage is worth 3 times the prices of a Hog.
