Often you have some exertion before a dive, such as struggling to get you gear on, bending to get your fins on, swimming to the shot line buoy, walking down the beach etc. Any shortage of breath that occurs at this stage will increase your air consumption throughout the dive if it is not alleviated before you dive. After the exertion and before you actually submerge take time just to float and relax until your breathing is normal, steady and shallow.
