Frontier airlines just called and said that because the Mexican government is limiting flights into and out of cozumel and cancun, our flight on tuesday December 27 from Denver is cancelled. They are only being allowed to fly on saturdays. They gave us the options of 1) flying into Cancun on the same day, but not paying for the cost of bussing and ferrying from cancun to playa to cozumel (not to mention the annoyance of lugging a week's worth of clothes and dive gear around); 2) rescheduling for free to saturday flights (which are not an option for us because of other travel plans and school); or 3) a full refund.

Highly frustrating, since I just emailed with travelocity today to make sure our flight was still there (it was.) In fact, on all the travelocity-type websites, those tuesday flights are still listed. Now it looks like we are just going to have to cancel our trip. Making a seven-day trip into essentially a 5 day trip, with all that hassle, is not my idea of a vacation.

Just a warning to anyone flying to cozumel any time in the next couple months - check on YOUR flight status ofter. Frontier didn't even know about this until today

That warning applies to ALL airlines. Continental has reduced their service to one flight a day, in the afternoon, so if your connecting flight out of Houston is before 8:00 pm, you aren't likely to make the connection.

So, we may swallow our pride (and spend some time and money) to fly into cancun, and just transport over to coz. Is there any way to set up the trip from cancun airport to playa online or by phone? I'd really like to have that done before we get there. We're going to be lugging all our gear, so we really can't do a public bus. Also, does anyone know how to find out when they start in the morning - our flight might get in at 5 am!!! Then, at Playa, does anyone know what time the ferries to coz start in the morning now, on a saturday?

Thanks

I don't know of a way to book ground transport ahead of time from Cancun to Playa, but it's really not a big deal to do it when you get there. 5 AM may be a bit early, though; you may have to hang out in the CUN airport for a bit. There are plenty of options for getting to Playa, from riding a public bus (cheap) at one end to taking a cab (not so cheap) on the other. You haven't said how many there are in your party; when I last did that there were seven of us, so hiring a van was our best option. It was not very expensive and the driver stopped for beer.

The ferries start at 6 AM, so that aspect of it won't be a prob, but your hotel may not let you check in until noon or later unless they let you arrange something with them ahead of time.

My advice is to consider yourself ON VACATION from the minute you get on the plane; the trek to and from Cozumel by land and sea is just part of the adventure. Don't stress out; there are many folks every day that do this. It's no biggie.

We're flying into Cancun as well. If you want a private transfer DITA (www.getdita.com) is great. They are very reliable, will track your flight and be there to meet you regardless of when you arrive, and we've never been late for a departure flight with them either. Roundtrip Cancun-Playa del Carmen is $95 for 2 people, $115 up to 7 people and $125 up to 10 people.

We just go the notice yesterday from Continental that our flight has changed. We are flying from Newark on 12/3 and returning 12/10. The flight out was originally going to get us into Coz at 11:30 AM and now we are getting in at 3:30PM. On the way back the flight was pushed back as well, we were supposed to leave Coz at 12:15 and now its 4:45.
But it's OK, the flight hasn't been cancelled (yet, our fingers are crossed) and we're going diving in Coz. its all good!!

Customs in CUN takes awhile.
Check-in for outbound flight in CUN takes 2 hours.

Make sure that you plan accordingly!

Taxi is expensive, but its the easiest. Buy your ferry tickets on the way to the pier. Both ferry companies are comparable. Ticket is about 5 bucks per person each way.
Taxi will pick you up at the ferry in Coz, and thats cheap and easy!

We have done it this way a number of times, and really isn't a big deal. Spend a little extra time in Playa del Carmen. Its a kick!

Ferry tickets from Playa to Coz (or the reverse) are $11 per person each way. It's best to purchase one way only. Since there are 2 ferry lines and they do not honor eachother's tickets and you never know which ferries are running at what hour.... well, you get the drift!

Enjoy!

Has anyone heard how long before the airlines will start normal fights into Coz. Was thinking of setting up a small trip in March or April.
