One more possibility for the Eels. The question was if they were stocked or got there on their own, the answer was.

We have never stocked eels into freshwater pond in Massachusetts that I am aware of. Eels are capable of travelling over land but as you point out Hathaways pond is a kettlehole pond in a deep depression without any surface water connections. I have been told that sometimes small eels are mixed in with the seaweed used to pack grass shrimp which are an excellent bait for the smallmouth bass and trout found in Hathaways Pond and this seems the more likely explanation.
