I am going to be staying at the Westin in Hollywood while my wife attends a conference, and I will be diving the week of Septeber 7-10th. I have booked three days with American Dreams and one day with Scubatyme. I have noticed during the week these boats only run morning trips. Do any other area charters run afternoon trips, especially if they are close enough for em to do an AM with one of these, and a PM trip with them?

Also, I have been diving a 3mm full here in North Carolina, with water temps ranging low to upper 70's. What is the water temp in FL? Should I keep the full or bring my shorty? I do not chill easily, although if I am diving any of the wrecks, I like to have the protection of a full suit.

Water temp is in the low 80's, and I dive in a 1mm. Check South Florida Diving HQ They might have afternoon trips.

And if they don't work out, try a shore dive at Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. Not as good as a boat dive, but it's a dive!

thanks for the links, now do not jinx me with Ike, until sunday, three of my last four trips were blown out

two questions:
1. I am staying at the Westin Diplomat in Hollywood, can I shore dive from there? If not, where are close driving places? Does the reef run parallel to the coast continously, or does it break apart in places?

2. Does the shallow reef (15-30 feet, ie. "nursery" have the same life/visability as the deeper reef? (lighthouse reef? 45-60 feet). Or are their advantages to the deeper reef?

thanks

I've seen more big stuff on the shore dive reefs. And there aren't any a$$oles to drive them away.

Head north on A1 to Datura Ave. It's the first street south of Commercial (870). Bring some quarters for the meters. The buoys are about the half way point to the first reef. And the buoy most directly off the beach entrance is near some old cannons. Kinda cool. A second, deeper reef, is another 100 yards or so further out. Nifty night dive, too.

Generally, viz isn't quite as good in shallower such as from a shore dive or on the close reefs but there certainly is plenty to see on them. Relatively speaking though, the viz will still be far better than up in NC. There is some good shore diving near where you're staying in Hollywood. Off Johnson St. is nice.
