I have no idea what this is... I have none of these on my rig...For scuba, these would be called suicide clips.

It isn't that the thumb button "wears out", its that the constant action of that button rubbing against the stationary part sharpens those edges enough to slice your thumb wide open. After a long pool session in the rigs at school, my right thumb would come out looking like raw meat due to clipping things off a few times.Teamcasa:He must use the smack out of those clips. Enough to wear them out
I have 100+ dives on two of my brass clips and they show no wear on the thumb button!
Anyone who dives often enough to actualy wear out a brass thumb button gets my vote for a truly committed diver. (Or he is a professional diver!)
Thanks for the info... can you elaborate why? I've already stated I don't have this type of clip...For scuba, these would be called suicide clips.
The same thing has happened to me on multiple occasions. I'm nowhere near a professional diver, but I have had the hamburger thumb a few times before I figured out what was causing the problem.
Clips with spring loaded gates that go inward are known as suicide clips in the tech/wreck/cave diving worlds because they can get snapped over a line accidentally resulting in an unwanted entrapment- bolt snaps are preferred because they can't accidentally hook you onto a line. Thanks for the info... can you elaborate why? To my experience, they only create problems when I attempt to release line from them...
Ya know, I've caught this on regular dives and never thought about it. I just changed them because I got them caught where I didn't want them... duh!Clips with spring loaded gates that go inward are known as suicide clips in the tech/wreck/cave diving worlds because they can get snapped over a line accidentally resulting in an unwanted entrapment- bolt snaps are preferred because they can't accidentally hook you onto a line.

I saw that after the explanation and my response...You've answered your own question.
