just like being anywhere, people like variety. Just because people may be in Mexico doesn't mean they have to eat Mexican food every night. Guido's is actually very good and they have fresh seafood specials every night as well, which is usually what I have when I go there. Prima on the other hand, blah, I can make better pasta at home if I want pasta. However, being that I live here, I definitely like to have the variety. The island isn't only tourists, so I'm glad we have Italian, Chinese, Sushi, McDonalds, Subway,Cajun, and whatever else. I know some American tourists hate the fact that we have a few American chains here now, but like I said, there are people that live here too, and I personally missed some of these places for junk food! No one says you have to eat there! Enjoy!

Which is why I said "people visiting Mexico". I can certainly understand the locals wanting variety. Personally I could never get sick of Mexican food in a week's time. When I consider the fact that nothing back home will compare, I never think to eat anything else.

I have, however, tried Prima (the other couple wanted to go there) and I agree with their food is sub par, but then again I live in one of the best places in the US to get Italian food so my standards might be a little high.

Hehe I live in Oklahoma, and our Texmex is OUTSTANDING We have several restaurants that I would put up against alot of Mexican Food places in Cozumel. :) That being said, I still enjoy the more *traditional* central Mexican food the island has to offer, but since we eat it ALOT back home, we can't do it 24/7. :)

So haveing the excellent variety available in Cozumel is nice in that we don't have to eat Mexican every night.

I agree on the Prima thing.....it is ok, but I think Guido's is 100x better. Plus the last time we went, the service was horrendous, and the owner.....well.....lets just say he didn't make it any better. :( But please tell everyone you know to go to Prima's, so we can keep Guido's nice and quite!!!!! Keep the POD PEOPLE away!!!

I understand James...if we didn't have Guido's which has very good food, then I would agree with you on this one. You should give it a try next time you're here. I always order off the special menu though, the chef's specials of the night.

AND, if you love Mexican food, PLEASE don't miss Mexico en los Siglos! It is amazing!

Prima is on so many lists. I honestly don't understand why anybody would eat Italian when visting Mexico.

James

Ah, but their mixed seafood grilled in garlic over linguine is (IMO) really good, and it's not exactly your traditional Italian, either. It ain't pizza!

Here in Austin, great Mexican places abound. When I go to Cozumel, the last thing I want is "Mexican food"; I live on fresh seafood while I'm there.

Guido's was so good we ended up eating there twice in one week.

There are three "La Missions" in town, but they really cater to the tourists. Good food, but pricey.

We found a couple "local" places for lunch that were very inexpensive and "authentico".

Just up the street from Deep Blue try "Casera Comida Tonita" for their lunch specials. 2 to 4 choices each day, includes entree, soup, fresh avocado, salsa, fresh handmade tortillas for about 35 pesos ($3.50 USD)

Right next to La Choza try "Jessy" for lunch. The special didn't seem to change, and they charge tourists a little more than locals, but the food was good and reasonably priced.

On Calle 6 Norte, across from the Hotel Flamingo is a little place called "El Morritto III". Simple and inexpensive tacos and tortas. Their Sopa Lima is supposed to be killer according to numerous reports of friends, but I didn't try it. They are only open until 4:00, but they are good.

Matt Daines recommended "Chaballitos" (or something very close to that) on Avenida 10 but they were closed when we tried them.

Hope some of those help out,

We have many favorites when we go to Coz. This is a list of our last trip to Coz which has more variety than usual.

El Moro - Twice. Zachariaz Especial for 2 is outstanding.
Ray will always treat you right. Conch, grouper, 3 different shrimp dishes, fresh home made flour tortias, bread. I could go on and on. I have seen several posts that have thought the food quality has declined but we did not experience this at all.

Cocos - Good breakfast at non tourist prices. Just down the street from Primas next door to the bank which is next door to Dive Pro.

La Choza - Twice. Love the orange hot sauce so much I buy two liters to go every trip. This time they had great Wahoo steaks. Two steaks about 3/4" thick for about $10. They always have very good specials. The garlic shrimp is also outstanding.

El Capi Navegante - Very good seafood. A longtime staple in Coz.. This was our first time here and we were not disappointed. A bit pricey but very good.

Ernesto's - Twice. Very convenient for us this trip traveling back and forth from town to FA. Had breakfast once and lunch another. Both meals were very good.

La Veranda - Very good dinner. First time for us and we will go back. The Caribbean Jerk Chicken was out of this world. The Palancar Coconut Shrimp very good as well. Very nice patio in the back outside.

Casa Mission - Always good and you can't go wrong with anything here. Never had a bad meal and they have nice variety if someone wants a steak or other seafood.

La Conchita Del Caribe - Out of the way seafood place. The Conch was very, very, very good. Did I say I liked Conch? Very laid back and casual but good food and very reasonable on prices.

Primas - Twice. I am surprised that Primas gets so many poor posts on this board. We love it. My wife and I love the Lobster and never get anything else. Best Lobster we have found on the island. 1/2 lbs lobster, home made pasta with pesto, steamed broccali for $20. Can't beat it.We usually make Guidos but did not this trip.

Las Palmeras

Or any local(where locals go) taco stand

Ron

Ya know, I sometimes hesitate to include Palmeras on my list of faves because of their catering to cruseros and their unfortunate choice of a Denny's-style menu design. Truth be told, I have eaten there many times over the years - at least once on every visit. It has been there forever; I know a couple of the waiters, and they treat me like a long lost relative every time I go in. Their grilled pulpa (not on the menu) is among the best you'll find on the island.
