You might take a look at a Marine Spar Varnish, I like the look of th finish over shellac, and iit has uv protection.

And it paramount, like the movie company, in case you want to use the word in the pub.

Or not typing around a toddler throwing a fit.
 
Purpleheart tends to turn darker/browner over time. I can't remember if it's a oxidization thing or a UV thing. In any case, if you want to preserve the vibrant purple color of the freshly worked wood do some research and choose your finish carefully. And if you're not confident in your finishing skills, definitely test/practice it on some scrap wood first. It's easy to mess up varnishing, but doing it right is very rewarding. Use medium or good quality brushes (not the cheapest ones!) and be patient.

As for sanding - the above advice in this thread is good. You'll do fine hand sanding or using a power sander, not much difference.
