I have the Velcro ankle straps on my DUI suit with attached boots, but the boots are still just a tad too big. I’ve found that fin keepers really help.

Out of curiosity, what were the pointers?
Use the suit for buoyancy until you are very comfortable with it then start using the bcd. Ditch the ankle weights. Dive in trim. Have proper weighting.

I failed to see a big difference in using ankle weights and very heavy fins : in both cases you had weight to your feet.
I think if your dry suit is a bit large around your calves, gaiters are an easy solution that works. Also bigger socks so that air cannot migrates to much around your feet.
