Claim your luggage whenever possible is my advice. Plan your connections so you will have time to do so. I would prefer a three hour wait in the airport for my connection and to arrive WITH my luggage than trying to push it for that quicker connection and discovering that whilst I made the connection my luggage didn't. Using that tactic, I have never lost my luggage after four years in the Bay Islands. Nearly all the people I know who have lost their luggage (about 40-50) all had a connection less than 1.5 hrs somewhere on their trip and this is where the luggage got seperated from them!

TACA standards of inflight/ticketing service are superior to Continental, Delta and American as Roatan Man says, they come close to European standards of service! On the ground it is the airport authority you are basically at the mercy of, not the airline!

TACA through Miami on Sundays, Spiritair through fort lauderdale on Monday Wednesday and I think Friday.

In the winter there are also flights from Toronto.

Finally don't forget the Milan option, bit out of your way from Canada though!
