oh yeah, one last question, it's not to difficult to find a direct flight between LAX and Cancun, is it?
Thanks,

Not at all. Lots of non-stops to Cancun and usually cheaper than getting to Cozumel. Some divers take advantage of the difference - flying to Cancun and then getting to Cozumel via bus to Playa del Carmen and then the ferry to San Miguel.

The only thing I can add to the above is that you might look for a direct flight to Cancun. Instead of doing the layover at the airport, you can do the bus and ferry. I think I may do that for our next trip. Sounds like you're flying American through DFW which is what I did last time, in which case your flight will not arrive on Coz til 2:30 PM. Tough to get afternoon dives on your first day. Coz diving blows Hawaii away. Get there any way you can and you'll be happy you did. Have fun.
I will be flying into cancun on a direct flight from Minneapolis. No charters or cheap flights into Coz this time of year so I thought I would give it a try. I will advise if it works out ok. RT Minneapolis to Cancun $99!! I think this fair makes the adventure worth while.

[It is an easy trip. You get off the plane, got catch the riviara bus, a 40 min ride to Playa, then catch the ferry. If you have the family and want to avoid the bus, there are plenty of shuttels and car services to Playa on the internet. I do it often with my 2 teen boys. Even took a group of 9 teens and 2 adults that way. The ferry is a nice way to unwind from the long trip. ENJOY

Try this one on for size -- because of Skymiles, went from Santa Barbara-San Francisco-Charlotte-Coz. Long, long day -- but free. Layovers are a pain, but then again, it gives you time to stretch out, get to the gate, and not feel harried when you board yet again. And, once you arrive, at least for us, the travel hassles are history, and we concentrate on the task at hand -- enjoying the fantastic warm clear water. It's all relative, I guess.

Did this in March. We used a taxi to go down to Plya Del Carmen just for speed. On the way back, we took the bus. Both modes are easy. Lots of fellows to carry your bags from the bus to the ferry.
