That's what happens when you live in an area where the median age is 85.

In the Keys the kids grow up with a boat throttle in one hand, and a beer in the other.

Yes the kids down here grow up with boats but they are taught how to handle a boat............ MY KIDS ARE AGAINST DRINKING!!!!!!
Most kids ask for a boat at 16 here and not a car because that's where they spend most of thier time is on the water.

The sad part of being a boat owner here in Florida is there are those of us who know how to operate a boat safely then there are the people who think they know how because they have a drivers license and they can drive a car. I know when I am out on the water with my boat I don't have to worry about what I am doing, I have to WORRY about the IDIOTS who don't know what they'er doing :dork2: ! just like being on my Harley. Watch out for the other guy!

You already have your answer about the license... although, I am curious why you would want another license (from FL). A second license won't make you a better operator.

Considering your costs...

I rented a 23' center console at Pennekamp State Park and went out for a half day. We hit several reefs at our own pace, with noone around. It was great! We dove and snorkelled in groups of 3, always leaving someone on the boat. We were all capable of operating the boat.

I found that with 4 divers aboard, we came out even financially, compared to getting on a cattle boat. The cost of the boat rental and fuel compared to 4 two tank trips is about the same. With the added freedom... it was a winner!

Consider how far you will have to motor to your bugs before you decide on the rental location.

Good luck!

p.s. If you decide to rent... don't rely on the photocopied charts they give you. Bring at least a handheld gps.
