I've hired tricicleros at the bus stop and they always dropped my luggage off on the pier near the loading area. Since the area is ropped off until boarding time, only people who work for the pier and ferry companies have access, so no security issue. Now we always took our pile of luggage and stuck it next to the table at Senor Frogs while waiting for the ferry. It is my understanding though if you hire a tricycle guy to take your bags to the dock you can somehow check them in early? So they are in the secure area and you can then walk around with out all the stinkin' bags. Maybe someone who has done this can give the details? Since I had heard that we have always been close to ferry time, so I never got to try it.
That being said, I of course still keep a eye on my stuff just in case. If I have two hours to kill and want to wander off to the beach or do some shopping, I prefer to put my luggage in a locker rather than leave it on the pier or carry it around. As mentionned in a previous post, there are two rather big ones available at the tiny pizza joint underneath the arcade (it's on the left hand side if facing the pier). The bus station also has a checked luggage facility, but you have to climb stairs to access it and you sometimes have to wait to be attented to. So not that convenient, expecially considering the fact I'm usually at the pier by the time I figure out I've just missed the boat.
