I was told it was rainwater. There were thiunderstorms all morning and and a pretty heavy one directly over us on the first dive. If it was ****, the shop owner, who is an hilarious curmudgen and was in the water with us with just a beanie and no wetsuit, would have had great sport with it.

As far as fresh water and salt water interfaces ther is an interesting occurance off of many deltas and or discharges. Since fresh water is lighter that salt it will often reach out far from shore by a process called "jet flow" and have different charactersitics until mixing is complete. With variances in water temp you may have a layer of salt, fresh and back to salt.

I just tried it with a 100 mile radius search and got:
