One thing that a lot of us do here is buy our booties and gloves at an outdoors store called Mountain Equipment Co-op. Instead of paying $60+ on booties at the dive shop, we get them from the paddling section of the store. Ditto gloves - you can get up to 3mm gloves at MEC for around $16 as opposed to paying $50+ per pair at the LDS.
Little "tricks" like hitting up the paddling section vs immediately paying out for brand stuff definitely helped me save money, especially with the different water temperatures here. I can get away with the reef gloves in the St Lawrence in summer while I need thicker gloves in the quarry. The only pair I've had to buy at the LDS were 5 or 6mm thick.
