Ok. So the ocean temp here now is 31F. And what do I do?! Go do my ACUC checkouts in the winter! Since I'm only doing a basic, I don't have a drysuit cert, so I had to dive wet.

Now, I've heard some terrible stories about people near freezing in such cold water, but, honestly, it wasn't that bad. I had an ABT of 33 minutes to a max depth of 33 feet (how conveinient. heh).

I got to see a pile of great things and the visibility was descent (40 feet). It could have been better though, since the usual vis is like 80+ feet here in the winter.

But, I got to see comb jellies, ocean pout, more sea urchins than a small army could shake sticks at, oodles of anemonies, winter flounder and other goodies.

It was an awesome time! I'm hoping to do my second dive tomorrow, but the forecast might make us call the dive. But hopefully, I'll get another two dives next weekend, giving me 90 minutes total bottom time, allowing me to be a certified open water diver!

I'm tres excited :p

:fish:

Welcome to diving. I hope your next dive will always be better than your last.

I was not happy in the 72 degree pool today!!! To top it off, I got a sunburn!

awesome, Pelagic... how about some pics?

33 minutes in 31 degree water? You're a Pelagic SUPERHERO!
My nether parts ache just thinking about it.

Wow, that's a long time in COLD water!
I just got back form SYDNEY!
A bit warmer water there. . . :)

The instructor took a bunch of pics of cool things and of me and my buddy. I e-mailed him and asked him if he could send me the pics. If he does, I'll post them, post-haste (:p)

Way to go. If you can certify in those temps you can probably dive anywhere. I just completed ice dive cert. and stayed warm too, but I was dry.

whew.... inspired by Pelagic, i did two extreme temperature dives this past weekend...

the water was a rather chilly 72 degrees at Blue Spring, Florida, but we got through the dive through sheer willpower, only to be confronted with 65 degrees air temperature... oh mama... only true dedication and love of the sport got us into
the water for the second dive, after which the air temperature had risen to the mid-70's.

and they say we Florida divers don't know temperature extremes...
