Ok. So the ocean temp here now is 31F. And what do I do?! Go do my ACUC checkouts in the winter! Since I'm only doing a basic, I don't have a drysuit cert, so I had to dive wet.

Well done, eh? And welcome to diving. Look on the bright side; it can only get better. :D

Pelagic Hero:
But, I got to see comb jellies, ocean pout, more sea urchins than a small army could shake sticks at, oodles of anemonies, winter flounder and other goodies.

And coincidentally, Canada does indeed have a small army, often armed with sticks.

It was an awesome time! I'm hoping to do my second dive tomorrow, but the forecast might make us call the dive. But hopefully, I'll get another two dives next weekend, giving me 90 minutes total bottom time, allowing me to be a certified open water diver!

I'm tres excited :p

:fish:

Just wait until you get your first warm water dive somewhere like Cozumel. You'll feel like you're cheating somehow.

Is that what you were diving? I i i i i i i' m freezing just thinking of that!

And here I am, considering our lakes cold...

Where in NF are you from? I spent two weeks there in the summer of '01 and had a great time (no diving, though).

Pelagic Hero,

Reading your post REALLY gets me excited as we do our open water in 2 weeks. It's up to 42F here but we are taught dry. Next pool dive we use our drysuits and expect to loose all our 'Godlike' coordination as our instructor puts it. I can hardly wait to see the sea life for myself.

DrD

My wetsuit / drysuit changover temperature is 20c.
Thats non negotiable :)

DeepTrip:
Can't even imagine that, 31 degree????? How thick is your wetsuit, do they made 15mm wetsuit?

I was wearin' 14 mm of neoprene. It was damn cold yet fun.

Needless to say, air consumption suffers, since when you submerge your instant reaction with such cold water on your face is to GAAAAAAAAASP!!!!

As for the ice-cream headache, it goes away once you can't feel your head anymore.

The worst part is changing out of the wetsuit when it's even colder out of the water than in. Incidently, I mooned a feery as it was pulling out of the ferry platform. Ooops!

If you're wondering, we were diving at Portugal Cove on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland. Good times!
