Definitely consider or at least have him try spit fins in a pool. I've always used paddle fins (quattros), but a few years ago I sprained my knee skiing. Within a week I had to do a dive for work and couldn't move my bad knee with the paddles. I borrowed some ScubaPro TwinJet Max splits and it worked! I was able to get the job done. Definitely worth a try.

Atomic Split Fins:
  • There are 2 different compounds in the open heel line. The stiffer "Lightweight High-Energy Compound" is used in the translucent-gray "smoke on the water" (with spring straps), "reef red", pink, and purple versions. The "Standard Power Compound" is used in the neon-yellow, royal blue, blue, and silver versions.

Floppy fin on the affected foot, not a quite stiff and long fin on the other.

1. Scubapro Go Sport fins

2. Scubapro Go Sport Gorilla (a little stiffer than the above)

3. Scubapro SuperNova fins. They are the best fins I have ever used by far. Faster, less tiring and comfortable. They are heavier and longer than the two above but still very efficient and comfortable.

I'd go with 1 or 2 based on your situation. If you can find a place where your husband can try them all in a pool, this would be most ideal.

I realize this is counterintuitive because it might seem that the best option for someone with an ankle or foot injury is to use open heel fins where you might get some extra support from the booties. However, I also have Achilles heel issues (gout-related) and I find that the most comfortable option for me is the Mares Volo Race, which is a fairly long full-foot fin but is super-efficient and works for various finning techniques.

When my heel acts up, I find that alternating between finning techniques is very helpful.

Just went through a similar situation.
I had a broken ankle and a grade 3 sprain on multiple ligaments. Not the exact same injury, but I was immobilized for 4 months.

Ligaments and tendons can take a long time to recover. Achilles tendon injuries especially are no joke so respect the recovery.

I recommend starting off with something light but has a generic shape, specifically OMS slipstreams with a thick boot. They are almost the same shape as Jetfins but much much lighter. The generic shape will allow you to do alternate your kicks a lot easier and give good support.
