Once you get the problem of her ears figured out, I would second the recommendation of Tres Pelicanos. I have seen them work with a lot of insecure divers (as well as a blind diver doing their very first ocean dive) and I can assure you that as long as you let them know up front what your concerns are, they will take good care of you.

I would definitely get the ears fully checked out by an ENT specialist. I had a dive buddy several years ago that had a lot of trouble clearing, took a long time to descend, then blew out his ear drum with a reverse squeeze on the ascent. Painful and it kept him from any diving for several months. Turns out he had a partially blocked eustachian tube, and it couldn't equalize the pressure changes going back up. Could have eliminated that blown ear drum if it been diagnosed and fixed before the dive. If it takes your wife a long time to clear going down, it might also present a problem going back up again, and that could be very dangerous. As to dive ops, I would definitely go with one of the high-service valet dive ops, they'll give you a lot more personal attention. There are plenty on the Island, Aldora, Blue XTSea, Scuba with Allison, Tres Pelicanos, and others. You won't go wrong with any of them.

That's why I never use the Valsalva (sp?) "hold your nose and blow" equalization method. Even if that works going down, there is no equivalent method for depressurization upon ascent. It's possible to overcome a blockage going down that will not clear coming up.

"by the dock" is ambiguous. Do you mean by the ferry pier downtown?

By a specific dive shop dock?

By a cruise ship pier?

Knowing where you are staying may impact your dive shop choice.

We are staying at the Palmar Condominiums.

First and most important is to get a competent doctor's assessment that she is OK to dive. I would assume that this also verifies that she is capable of equalizing her ears.

.........All of this assumes that she WANTS to dive as opposed to doing it for pressure-related reasons.

Have to agree..........In reality-----------you 'be asking' @ the wrong place-----ie here......

you can shore dive across the street at tikila. Mario charges about $15 a tank if you have your own gear or you can rent gear. The entry is easy and it is a great way to do a relaxed intro dive to get comfortable. There are coral heads, fish cribs, and the statues of Cousteau and a local whose name I do not know. OR you can leave her to sleep late and enjoy the pool deck while you enjoy a morning two tanker.

You are just north of Park Royal and the southern cruise ship piers. The website mentions that this complex is beachfront but I suspect that it is really ironshore.

Del Mar Aquatics may have the closest dock but verify and you are close to Dive with Martin at the International Pier.

When you contact dive ops, mention where you are staying. I would add that you are about a block north of Casa del Mar and Park Royal.

Then ask where they pick up. You may have to drive or take a taxi depending upon their answer.

I believe that me previous approach is well-advised (add in consulting with DAN....good suggestion). Diving is a great activity but not everyone is as great as I am. I had initial troubles, ear clearing concerns and my normal clumsiness. It takes people different timing to become proficient and at ease. Some are fish and a natural. Others like me require work, training, and help from others to get there.

Make sure that she is medically OK to dive and take it slow.

If she might be more comfortable with a female instructor, I know that Aldora has one or more....all wonderful people. Verify the availability of female instructors since I do not have access to the current staff roster.
