I'm looking for a decent resort that has both Diving and stuff to do for the non-diving members of my family. My son and I both dive but my wife and 8 yr old daughter don't.

I'm looking for a resort that would have both shore and boat dive access. I've heard that Cobalt has both but the Shore diving is not so good.

Any suggestions??

Dave

There are several resorts which are great for families with non-divers, but few offer shore diving. The locations with shore diving generally do not have a beach which can be important for some.

I would probably tend to compromise and forgo the on-site shore diving requirement. Many resorts have on-site boat diving, and many operators will pick you up anywhere along Seven Mile Beach.

Dave,
Last December I stayed in the Comfort Suites on 7 mile beach. It is not the flashiest resort on the island, but it is certainly the most reasonably priced, and I believe it's a steal for the money! The rooms are very nice, the staff is great, and it is home of Don Fosters' dive shop for your diving convienence. The beach isn't much, but you've got 7 miles both ways to choose from :). It's in a good location and can provide fun for every member of your family. Good luck.

my wife and i stayed at the Treasure Island Resort when we were there. nothing
flashy, but reasonable, they have access to the beach, and the on-site diving
with Bob Soto is very nice (good crews and boats). also, smack in the middle of
Seven Mile Beach, so very central.

i'd certainly stay there again.

Shore diving at cobalt not so good? I think its easily the best shore diving at a resort on the island! The mini wall at cobalt is great, full of life and untouched, and you can also dive the deep wall from the shore easily which is the same deep wall that you would be diving on from a boat. I've seen a turtle every dive at the deep wall at Cobalt, and thats probably at least 20 dives at that site. And if you want a little change Dive Tech (cobalts on site shop) has another location nearby at the Turtle Farm, which I'm sure many on this board will agree is a great site with real easy access to a mini wall, 95% guarantee of a large school of Tarpon and plenty of other good stuff, including another good deep wall location.

Sorry to rant but I couldnt believe that somebody could call it not so good. They've got a nice pool for your wife and daughter and have other non diving activities available also.
Ty Sawyer, of Sport Diver magazine was there this past summer with his wife and kids and wrote a nice article about the resort in a fall issue of the mag.

DWJ,does your wife and daughter snorkle? If so,Dive Tech@ Cobalt coast is a great location for them,If your 8yr old doesn't ,they have a easy class she could take,Im not sure of what all they do, I think it is called a bubble maker class. The staff at Dive Tech is great with young ones. And they can explore the shore line, And Cobalt isn't to far from the deserted beach tons of sand,And Cobalt is only 20 min from 7 mile beach. And the Turtle farm is very close,And the whole family can check out the Butterfly farm,Last Summer they had it so you pay once to get in and you can go back many times before you leave,Making it nice to see the new Butterflies coming in to the world.Plus if your wife and 8 yr old do snorkle they can go to Stingwray city. What ever you decide have fun.Turtle gal

Both My wife and Daughter snorkle, Went to the bahamas in Feb and I had a blast snorklng with her. We went to the turtle farm last year. It seems to me to be one of those " seen that, what's next " places. But I never heard of the Butterfly farm that would be real cool!

Thanks

If memory serves me, it was that article that said the shore diving was not so good, mainly because of the distance to the wall from shore. Anyway it's a good reminder about the article, I'll re-read it tonight.

Whats the take on Sunset House???

Drew-

I've considered that. Beach is important for the wife. My son and I would perfer to spend the entire trip diving. That why shore diving simply added to the two tank dives most of the resorts offer.

I've read with great intrest a number of your other posts regarding Grand Cayman. As a local, your first hand knowledge is invaluable. Thanks for all your contributions.
