Main reason I want to recover the data in my log book is that gear information, weighting, conditions, dive operators and notes on each dive are there. When I plan other dives I want to be able to refer to past dives as well.

I've never had anyone actually look at my log book and I rarely have anyone sign off on it, but I log nearly every dive. It's nice to know what fish you saw where and at what depth, condition of sites. This makes it easier to track changes of time as well.

My memory isn't what it used to be and the log book helps me remember key details on dives.

I don't log practice dives at all. So is that like faking log book entries in reverse?

People, how many times you've been wet isn't necessarily an indicator of how good your diving skills are. Faking a logbook isn't going to fool anyone. At least practice dives will get you comfortable in the water, pretend dives will probably just get you hurt (or worse).

Maybe we could put a gold star on everyone's BC for every dive?

I don't think any of the posters who support logging dives EVER said how many dives in their log book is an indication of "how good" they are. I think the prevailing theme is it is a SELF document to help track information for the LOGGER, not for others.

Don't know why you've taken such an attacking position and generalization. If you don't want to log dives, don't! Just because you don't, doesn't mean those who do are beneath you.

Joe, I was referring to people who might fudge their logbooks, it wasn't intended at everyone. Though it read that way, it wasn't meant to. I'll edit the original post. :)

That's cool, I obviously misunderstood your post. My apologies.

Hi guys,
thanks for the input you had to the situation I presented earlier. You will be glad to know that this person isn't really planning on working as a divemaster anytime soon, he just doesn't take diving as seriously as I do.
Surprisingly, in terms of CPR, he actually teaches it and knows a lot about it (makes you wonder though).
Sorry if there is someone out there who dives with the same buddy and fills their logbook in with the same pen each time, I was just trying to illustrate my point, but probably could have done so differently.

I don't keep a log book but in my head. Noody did that in the 60s I don't think and by the time logbooks were common I had hundreds of dives. I have them locked in my memory. Maybe not all the details but I do remeber them--lol.

One time I went to dive in the keys, despite numersous sert cards the operator would not let me dive without a logbook. After much goings on, I asked him if he sold logbooks?, he said yes, i bought one and stood in front of him and filled out the three required dives. I just made them up on the spot. He looked at me and I handed him the logbook, good to go! Federal regulations make logbook entires in a pilot log a crime to fake. We as divers do not have any Feds requiring any sort of logbook. I am not interested in keeping one. If I have to in order to get on a dive boat I will fake another. It isn't like I don't have several thousand dives behind me over a 38 years period in all sorts of conditions. It is the "fake" scuba courses that need to be addressed, then fake logbooks would not be needed and a dive operator could put faith in your C-card that a diver is actually competent. N

logging fake dives goes to show that the diver is not a very confident diver and doing a disservice to our great sport and past-time.
logging dives not only gives me a record of how many but also i can look back on them and see where i have dived and the great time i have had.have to admit i have been a bit lazy logging my last five so now i have to spend time going thru my computer to get them.bugger.
if you use or dont use a log book up to you,but faking them, only makes you look bad

LOL! My computer is sitting here on my desk right next to me waiting for me to upload the last 4 dives I did in NC in October. "Over my Christmas break," I promise it. :D I usually just write down the site and date in my log book, or any interesting critters. Then when I upload my dives, all the other info is readily available and I can insert thumbnail photos of the critters I took. And if I'm wearing the same type of suit, gear, weights, etc. during the whole trip, I'll just record that once.
