Hoping to get down to Emerald Isle end of August. This will be my first NC trip, taking the wife and kids to the beach, hoping to get a couple days of diving in during the week while the kids hang at the pool. With what I'm seeing here I'm thinking my 2mm full or 3mm shorty would be good. Any thing from a sea life perspective to consider when making a decision on a shorty?

So, all the temps everyone said to expect in this thread have not been true this year. The water on top is warm (80 or so now) but it's not uncommon to find 71 or so at the bottom. The last storm might have stirred things up, who knows.

Anyway, a lot of people are switching back to a 5mm or 3mm full with vest or something. It's a bit strange this year, temp wise, but the diving can still be good.

I dove a 3 mm shorty last year through the middle of October. I did pick up a couple of minor nettle stings on one wreck dive. With the hot topside temps I'd prefer the shorty but I had replaced the aged suit for a 3/2 full this year.

Dove last Saturday 25 miles off the coast of morehead city and the surface was 80 at 55 ft it dropped to 71. All fine in my 3MM suit. Sunday was canceled due to Tropical storm. Heading out this weekend for more (can't seem to get enough).
