Deux plongeurs meurent noyés dans une ancienne carrière en Haute-Vienne
Les deux victimes effectuaient une sortie en club dans l'ancienne carrière de Montulat près de Limoges
An investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances of the tragedy. Two people in their sixties drowned on Wednesday during an outing to a former quarry in Haute-Vienne , a well-known site converted into a diving center , we learned this Thursday from the gendarmerie.
According to the newspaper La Nouvelle République , the victims, a "seasoned" diver who had been registered with a club for 30 years and a new enthusiast, who had been licensed for a year and held a level 1 diver's certificate, were members of the Montmorillon diving club, a town in the neighbouring department of Vienne, around forty kilometres from the site.
Firefighter training site
The duo was part of a two-group outing from the Aquarillon club in Montmorillon, in the water on Wednesday in the old Montulat quarry, located 40 km north of Limoges . Very popular with divers in the region, the site also serves as a training ground for firefighters.
"The water was not cold, they were trained, the equipment was good, they knew the site, it's incomprehensible," a source close to the case told an AFP correspondent.
When contacted, the mayor of Montmorillon and the club did not wish to comment immediately.
